Welcome
Hobart Playback Theatre has been creating the magic of improvisational performance in Tasmania since 1995. We are a not-for profit organisation and part of an international network of Playback Theatre Companies performing for community building, leadership development, conflict resolution, social change and celebration.
Playback Theatre is improvisational theatre, where audience members tell stories from their lives and then watch them re-enacted on stage. It is raw and riveting.

We perform for community groups, schools, conferences and corporations. The Company has partnered with non-government and government agencies addressing issues such as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transsexual and Intersex (LGBTI), life in prison, grandparents caring for grandchildren, young mothers, asylum seekers and aged care.
It was a pleasure collaborating with Playback Theatre culminating with several performances of The Elephant in the Room, about Death and Dying. What a creative and engaging way it was to encourage conversations about death. There was laughter and tears and the audience was enthralled with some participants lighting up and showing us their theatrical side for the first time. A great experience for all who participated … it turns out the conversations are not so difficult after all!
